Located in Rua dos Ferreiros, Livraria Esperança was the first commercial establishment to sell only books in Madeira, being one of the largest bookstores in Portugal and Europe. Founded in 1886, it is in an old palace, hence the traces of refinement, where the ceilings decorated with gilded carvings, white stucco and part of the original flooring from the late 19th and early 20th centuries stand out. At the entrance, marvel at its iron gates.
If you like reading, Livraria Esperança is a must-visit place. Feel good in the middle of books everywhere, as three floors full of them wait for you. Find the copy you have been looking for so long, or buy one as a gift for someone who hasn't had the chance to visit Madeira yet. Books are displayed by the cover and not the spine, which can be confusing, but anyone who likes books will love this idea.
