Jardim do Mar
Place of Interest
Located in Calheta, Jardim do Mar is a parish surrounded by the sea and constrained by the mountains. It preserves the tranquillity and rurality of the old days, easily translated by the narrow streets and low houses with original chimneys, which take on a decorative dimension worthy of being photographed.
Its name comes from the contrast between the austere and vertical mountains with the green and indulgent resort by the sea, then covered by wildflowers. It became independent in the 18th century as it previously depended on Prazeres and Paúl do Mar.
Symbolic marks of the past are also, in the religious sphere, Nossa Senhora do Rosário Parish Church, which is said to be a replica of Notre Dame de Paris, and Nossa Senhora da Piedade Chapel. Both are worth your visit.
Jardim do Mar has been gaining importance in the surfer community for its three pebble beaches. Due to its location and rough seas, it is a privileged place for surfing and the best spot for its practice. It was here that editions of the Red Bull Big Wave Challenge and the World Surfing Championship took place.
