Paul do Mar
Place of Interest
Located in Calheta, Paúl do Mar is one of the oldest and most important fishing centres on the Madeira Coast. As a parish gifted with an incredible diversity of fish, it became a reference in the world of gastronomy. Nowadays, the banana crop is also in typical dishes.
The parish is a coastal paradise that takes you on a journey that heals the soul through the fabulous landscapes and views that harmoniously combine the mountains and the ocean. In any corner, you can count on peace.
Paúl do Mar is very popular with surfers due to its beaches. Ribeira das Galinhas is one of the most popular beaches due to the pleasant atmosphere of bars and restaurants nearby. Porto de Abrigo beach is quieter and sunny. Here, look for the famous Homem do Mar sculpture.
The Maktub bar is the most desired place to watch the sunset. Here, you can start a long walk from Fajã da Ovelha (7 km, 3 hours) to Prazeres with a remarkable route of 2600 stair steps. The reward is a privileged view over the sea and the mountains and, later, a trail that leads to the Miradouro dos Zimbreiros.
