Parque Municipal do Monte

Located in Largo da Fonte, in Monte, Parque do Monte or Parque Leite Monteiro is a municipal garden and a place that is difficult to describe in one word. It has an area of 26,000 m2 and is at an altitude of over 500 metres.

This charming ideal green area is a privileged place for fauna and flora due to the concentration of several exotic and indigenous species and centenary trees. Its construction began in 1894 and was originally the favourite place for aristocratic walks. Today, it brings the past to the present through something as genuine and pure as nature.

You can admire Nossa Senhora do Monte Church and the tomb of the Emperor of Austria, Carlos I. At the entrance, you will see a band-stand and the Virgin's Fountain, with the image of Nossa Senhora do Monte; in the centre, cool off by the lake that offers you the map of Madeira island carved in stone.
