Monte Palace Tropical Garden
Green Space
In the 18th century, an estate south of Monte Church became a beautiful farm. In 1897, it fell into José Berardo's hands, thus creating the Monte Palace Madeira. This magical place invites you to tranquillity in a natural show where harmony between nature, culture and art prevails. The 70,000 m2 is home to an internationally rich collection of exotic plants, swans, ducks, chickens and peacocks, which populate the central lagoon and roam freely.
The garden has artworks from various parts of the world (19th century) contrasting with the vegetation. Look for the four carved angels representing four of the five senses. Can you find out what they are? Also, explore the collection of tile panels that adorn the walkways.
Amazed by Portugal's influence in the East for 200 years, the owner tried to recreate Buddhist culture in the two oriental gardens through respect for nature and demarcated symbolic elements. The decoration emphasises the use of marble, bamboo and stone, as well as the main component of this kind of garden, Water. Ponds and waterfalls abound where Koi fish, islands and ornamental bridges abound.
