Jardim Botânico
Green Space
Located in Quinta do Bom Sucesso, the Botanical Garden of Madeira has been one of the most beautiful in Funchal since 1960, an ambition realised by Engineer Rui Vieira at Quinta da Família Reid's. It has about 35,000 m2, and peculiar conditions allow exuberant vegetation of harmonious shapes and patterns, contrasting colours and more than 2000 exotic plants. It consists of several ornamental shrubs, areas of orchids and lawns, as well as viewpoints and spaces for recreational activities.
In addition to being a beautiful leisure space, the Garden has become a centre for Science and Culture due to the growing loss of biodiversity and habitats worldwide. It preserves endangered plants simulating their original environment, from plants exclusive to Madeira Island to the Himalayas and South America.
Whether you are a nature lover, botanist or a tourist, you can also visit the Natural History Museum (15,000 specimens), a Herbarium (24,000) and the Loiro Parque - a space that brings together exotic and rare birds.
It is 3 km from Funchal, and you can take the cable car. Open every day from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. The adult ticket costs 5 €.
