Fortaleza de São Tiago
Monument & Heritage
Located in the Historic Centre of Funchal, the Fortress of São Tiago was built in 1614 to protect the city from the pirate attacks who coveted Madeira sugar. This urban fort and military architecture does not go unnoticed, even to the most distracted, for its intense yellow colour! Today, the Fortress is an integral part of the “Old Zone of Funchal” and is now a Monument of Regional Interest.
Over time, it underwent several restorations and was used for military purposes, namely for the Army Police and Funchal Lancers Squadron, until 1992. Transferred to the Regional Government, it has been exploring a diversified cultural program and is used for the same purpose under the tutelage of the Museums of Funchal. Today, it houses the Museum of Contemporary Art, with rotating and themed exhibitions of contemporary art from the region and a restaurant with a privileged location.
Open from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 05:30 pm. General Admission 3€. Senior Discount and Youth Card accepted.
