Venture into an original ride by a unique means of transport in the world, the Basket Cars, a wicker and wooden construction with two seats. Carreiros do Monte, the drivers, dress in white and wear straw hats. They make use of their thick rubber tire soles as brakes! Don't you believe it?
Traditionally produced by artisans since the 19th century, inhabitants used them as a fast means of transport between Monte and Funchal. Today, they are Madeira's most popular tourist attraction. On this ride, you will travel 2 km in 10 minutes at a speed of up to 30 km/H! It starts in Monte, a small village on the mountains that top Funchal, and ends in Livramento. The ride is full of emotion, exuberant and unmissable!
Open from Monday to Saturday from 09h00 am to 07h00pm. The price is 30€ for two people. Accessible by bus and cable car.
