Fortaleza de São João Baptista do Pico
Monument & Heritage
Located in Pico das Frias, São Pedro Parish, S.João Baptista do Pico Fortress was built in the context of the Disnastia Filipina, in the 17th century, as an integral part of the defensive system and also as a gunpowder warehouse in Funchal. Later, after the transfer to the Portuguese Navy in the 20th century, it became the Madeira Telegraphic Radio Station. Because of the many aerials installed, the inhabitants started calling it Pico Rádio.
At more than 110 metres above sea level, it maintains the original Mannerist structure, with four pentagonal bastions that develop internally on two levels. The enclosure of the Fortress, in the form of a citadel, occupies about 2750 square metres. It also stands out for its vaulted rock cistern and has one of the best views over the Funchal city and port.
As part of the recent rehabilitation works, the infrastructure became part of a multipurpose, aimed at concerts and conferences. Go to exhibitions and enjoy the cafeteria with a privileged view.
Open and free from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm.
