Porto Moniz
Place of Interest
Porto Moniz is a small town in the north of Madeira, named after Francisco Moniz, who married João Gonçalves Zarco's granddaughter, one of the three famous discoverers of the island.
Facing isolation for many years, Porto Moniz is today a paradise for visitors, mainly because of its natural pools formed by volcanic rocks. The deep blue ocean, the landscape, and other natural resources fascinate those who pass by and invite you to swim and relax. The bathing complex has support structures that make it accessible to children and people with special needs.
What else can you visit in Porto Moniz? Centro de Ciência Viva (Live Science Centre) and Madeira Aquarium are good options. In the parish of Achadas da Cruz, northwest of the island, have a ride on a cable car from the village to the ocean. In the parish of Ribeira da Janela, go to the Miradouro da Eira da Achada (Viewpoint) and let yourself be dazzled. In the parish of Seixal, it is mandatory to stop to enjoy the famous Cascata Véu da Noiva at the viewpoint with the same name or on the road.
