Cidade de Santana

Place of Interest

Located in the north of Madeira, Santana is the first Portuguese 21st-century town, although it has not changed its rurality. From an early age, it has had a historical connotation, being one of the most picturesque and traditional places on the island, at 400 metres altitude. The town name is due to its patron Saint Ana, honoured by the construction of a church that deserves a visit.

Many tourists are attracted to Santana from the scenic points due to the Laurissilva forest, the boxwood and hydrangea lanes, and the most adventurous pedestrian paths and Levadas trails. From the point of view of traditional architecture, it is worth noting the typical triangular houses with thatched roofs, which have become a symbol of the town postcards.

Contemplate the landscapes of Pico Cortado, Cova da Roda and Pico Ruivo. Explore artistic and nature-made geological formations: the “Face” and the “Standing Man”, from which a legend told children was built. Carefully observe the coast, considered a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
