Located in Funchal downtown, Mercado dos Lavradores is a historic building with a unique architecture typical of Estado Novo, where colours, sounds, smells, and people come together. Inaugurated in 1940, it was a project by Edmundo Tavares, who intended to turn this market into the city's largest supply hub. Today, it still performs the same functions, selling numerous products. Large tile panels adorn the façade, inviting you to go in.
It's an unusual place, meaning it is very enjoyable. Here you will find all the best Madeira has to offer in terms of gastronomy and traditions: exotic fruits, fish, meat, spices, vegetables and lush flowers. The aromas fill the space but so does folklore! It is still possible to find sellers dressed in traditional Madeiran costumes spreading colour and joy!
Open from Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 19:00 but on Saturday only in the morning.
