Casa das Mudas – Museu de Arte Contemporânea
Museum | €-€€
Located in Calheta, MUDAS is a museum of Portuguese contemporary art from the 60s to the present. It was designed by the architect Paulo David in a projection of a modern building in a sober and pleasant environment, providing idyllic perspectives of the interior over the sea and surrounding slopes. For its structure, it has been awarded internationally and has been the stage for exhibitions, musical shows, plays and conferences.
The collections were principally enhanced throughout the 90s, and today they are a national reference for Portuguese artistic production. MUDAS is where the contemporary art collection of the São Tiago Fortress is on display. Artists from the 60s, 80s and 90s are represented, such as: Helena Almeida, Artur Rosa, Joana Vasconcelos and Pedro Valdez Cardoso. It includes a selection of pieces by Lourdes Castro, a renowned Madeiran artist.
Open from Tuesday to Saturday. General ticket: 4€. There are discounts for groups. The museum offers a virtual tour.
