Place of Interest

Less than 25 km separate Funchal city from Machico, where Tristão Vaz Teixeira and João Gonçalves Zarco landed for the first time when they discovered Madeira in 1419. Located on the Island's east coast, Machico is made up of five parishes, becoming a city in 1996.

In addition to its historical importance, Machico has a lot to offer. For a start, why don't you go to Igreja Matriz do Machico, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição? Built in the 15th century, it became a Parish Church in 1460.

If you want to enjoy the bathing season on the Island, a trip to Machico Beach with the children will be a joy: a quiet beach with white sand and transparent waters. Here it is easy to have a meal or simply a snack, as you will find a lot on offer.

Don't leave Machico without going to the Miradouro Francisco Álvares Nóbrega for an exclusive view of the city, the wonderful Machico Bay and the beach. It is an excellent opportunity to take lots of panoramic photographs.
