Porto da Cruz

Porto Cruz is one of the five parishes of Machico, located 36 km from Funchal and on the north coast of Madeira Island. The name derives from a cross placed in the ancient port. A rural and agricultural place, it bears witness to the age of Ouro Branco, sugar. Here is a suitable opportunity to taste a Madeira wine or a local rum.

Do not persuade yourself when you look around and think there is nothing to do in Porto da Cruz. To start, head to a small factory and museum to see the old Engenho do Norte, still operational and destined for rum production. Be transported back in time and learn about the process from sugar cane to rum production.

If you are an experienced hiker, walk along Vereda do Larano Depart Porto Cruz and head to Machico. From Porto Cruz to Miradouro da Boca do Risco, walk along a narrow and unprotected path, where the level of demand is very high. From this viewpoint, the trail is easy and along a Levada.
